GEM Edwards Pharmacy does not currently offer any disposal services for unused or expired medications. We recommend following the established FDA guidelines for safe disposal, which helps to prevent misuse or harm to others and also to protect the environment. Generally the best way to dispose of most unused or expired medicines (both prescription and over the counter) is to drop off the medicine at a drug take-back site, location, or program immediately. Please note that needles and syringes typically require different disposal. Visit the FDA website for further instructions.
Fold the patch in half so the sticky, medication-containing sides adhere to each other. This helps contain any remaining medication and prevents accidental skin contact.
Choose the appropriate disposal method based on the patch type:
- High-risk opioid patches (such as fentanyl): After folding, flush the patch down the toilet immediately. These patches are included on the FDA’s flush list to reduce the risk of accidental exposure or misuse.
- Non-opioid patches (such as nicotine or hormone patches): Do not flush. Place the folded patch in a sealed, child-resistant container—like an empty prescription bottle, sturdy plastic jug, or coffee can—then dispose of the container in your household trash.
Use drug take-back programs whenever possible. Authorized take-back options (available at pharmacies, hospitals, or community events) are the preferred method for safely disposing of both unused and used patches and are more environmentally responsible.
Store patches securely—both new and used—out of reach of children and pets, such as in a locked cabinet, until proper disposal is possible.
